Meet Our Multicultural Liaison Officer: Hasib Afzal

Our school’s Multicultural Liaison Officer (MLO) supports newcomer students and families with settlement services, navigating the school system, language interpretation, and more.

The Multicultural Liaison Officer (MLO) program provides support in multiple languages for students and families who are newcomers and refugees. The Multicultural Liaison Officer works with school staff to welcome newcomer families and connect them with important services, resources, and supports within our school and in the local community.

Hasib Afzal is the Multicultural Liaison Officer at our school. Hasib speaks Urdu, Pashto, Farsi, Dari, Hindi, English, and can also help you access support in other languages

Hasib is here to support families with:

  • Settlement services

  •  Navigating the school system

  •  Language and cultural interpretation

  •  Accessing community services

  •  Filling out school forms

  •  Parent-teacher interviews

  •  Getting involved at school, and more!

Bio:

Hasib Afzal

Hasib has been with OCISO since 2021. Hasib loves assisting and supporting newcomers to integrate into the school environment.

Before joining OCISO, Hasib was a Cultural Consultant with the Department of National Defence in Ottawa for 6 years. Hasib has a Bachelor of Arts in Post Conflict Development.

Hasib’s favourite quote comes from Gandhi: “Unity in diversity is the highest possible attainment of a civilization, a testimony to the most noble possibilities of the human race.”
